Navigation

We all know how important navigation can be, especially when out in the country and in poor weather.  Being able to navigate well using a map, compass, gps device* or smartphone* with decent maps can add to our enjoyment and safety when out on a walk.

There are lots of publications and sources of advice on map reading and navigation available in bookshops and on the web:

*Note that any advice about gps or smartphones in the context of navigation will always warn against relying on battery operated devices and on devices that require a good phone signal to access locations and mapping.  However, many apps are available that have built-in mapping, often versions of the OS Landranger or Explorer series; these need a GPS signal, of course, but do not need a phone signal to be effective.  Remember that batteries become less effective and have a shorter life when cold.
